Bookshelves can cost an arm and a leg here in Hong Kong, which is doubly annoying because of the fact that they’re often hideously ugly/lacking any personality/from Ikea. But if you’re willing to pay the little contractor downstairs for some drilling / drill yourself (during weekdays only please) then you suddenly open yourself up to some very fun, very cheap options for bookshelves.
NOTE : Remember that drilling holes in HK rental walls means that you’ll be responsible for resealing/returning the apartment to its original condition! For that reason it’s best to stick with the non-drilling options until you are invested in a long term stay or own your own apartment (how exciting for you! And yes, it is possible with all kinds of options, including 90% mortgages, which I cover in another post.)
Here’s an article from Buzzfeed which covers exciting options for low cost, DIY bookshelves that are cool and creative.
